Goya fish, also known as yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco), belongs to the class of ray-finned fish, the order of Siluriformes, the family of catfish, and the genus of catfish. Its common names include ga ya zi, yellow gu zi, etc.

The whiskers of the yellow catfish have 4 pairs of branches; the upper jaw whiskers are long, with the tip reaching or exceeding the base of the pectoral fin. The body is scaleless. The back edge of the dorsal fin spine is serrated. The pectoral fin spine is longer than the dorsal fin spine, with serrations on the front and back edges. The adipose fin is short. There are 21-25 anal fin rays. The caudal fin is forked, and the nose whiskers are half white and the other half black.

Yellow catfish is distributed in major freshwater bodies across the country, especially in the rivers and lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Its meat is tender, tough and has no intramuscular bones. It tastes delicious and is rich in nutrients.

Catfish, scientifically known as Melidiscus, is also known as bearded carp and glutenous fish.

The distinctive features of this fish are that it has no scales, its body surface is covered with mucus, it has a flat head and a wide mouth, and it has four whiskers on its upper and lower jaws.

The best season for eating catfish is between mid-spring and mid-summer.
