CATDOLL: I have a cicada at home. How do I raise it and can I keep it alive?

It can only live for 60-70 days at most, so it is not recommended to keep it.

Moreover, cicadas like to suck fresh tree sap (willow branches, apple branches, elm branches, apricot branches are all fine).

Also prepare a sealed, breathable container to prevent them from flying away.

If you want to raise them, it is recommended to raise them in the garden. Raising cicadas has high requirements for the environment.

They can be fed. Cicadas feed on the sap of trees. If you keep them at home, you can pick fresh branches to feed them. Choose healthy tree species with well-developed root systems, lush growth, and rich sap, such as poplar, elm, willow, tung, or various fruit trees in the orchard.

Feeding and management:

1. Provide high-quality feed, such as poplar, willow, elm or various fruit trees. Also intercrop root tuber plants, such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, etc., to provide feed for cicadas and larvae.

2. Provide good environmental conditions. The depth of cicada eggs is 30-50 cm. They must be buried in a sunny, frost-proof place with soft, fertile, pollution-free and suitable humidity. In winter, they should be covered with wheat straw, rice straw, corn stalks, etc. to maintain the ground temperature.

Additional information

Different types of cicadas have different life cycles. The life cycle of French cicadas is mostly 4 years, while there are cicadas in North America that can live up to 17 years. The lifespan of Chinese cicadas is mostly between 3 and 7 years, nearly half of which are 5 years, and a few can live for 8 to 9 years.

The male cicadas that can sing are the ones with the sound organs at the base of the abdomen, like a drum covered with a tympanic membrane. The tympanic membrane vibrates and makes sounds. Since the sound muscles can expand and contract about 10,000 times per second, the space between the cover and the tympanic membrane can resonate, so the sound is particularly loud, and they can use different tones in turn to sing passionately. The female cicada's musical instrument is not fully constructed and cannot make sounds, so it is a "dumb cicada".
