CATDOLL: How do wasps spend the winter?

How do wasps survive the winter?

Hornets are semi-hibernating insects. They start to huddle together when the temperature drops to 5℃. The lower the temperature, the tighter the huddle. The higher the temperature, the looser the huddle. When the temperature is higher than 7℃, they start to disperse. The survival rate after wintering is mainly related to the quality of their huddle.

If it is artificially raised, then during the winter, it is necessary to check the grouping situation once every 10 to 15 days. If it is found to be scattered, the temperature should be lowered in time and the light-shielding coat should be thickened.

There are five common ways to overwinter:

1. Nuptial flight: It is an obvious habit of the two types of bees, the golden-ringed and black-tailed. From September to November of the lunar calendar, their prospective queen bees and male bees will gather in large numbers in a certain place to fall in love. After AA, they will fly back to the nest to live for a few days. Then the prospective queen bee will go out to find a place to spend the winter, and the male bees will die.

2. Quasi-queen bee: the queen bee in its second year born by the queen bee and has not yet passed the winter.

3. Male bee: a bee that specializes in accompanying the queen bee and does not do other things.

4. Worker bee: also called professional bee, which is responsible for feeding, nesting, pulling soil, guarding, attacking and other matters.

5. Queen Bee: The quasi-queen bee of the previous year is called queen bee after wintering.

Hornets often die during the winter in the late winter, when their energy is almost exhausted and they are at their weakest. So once the temperature warms up, the hornets will disperse and fly away from their wintering sites to find food and replenish their energy. Hornets are most afraid of a sudden drop in temperature in late spring, because the scattered hornets lose their support to keep warm and are more likely to die in the spring cold.
