The catfish species farmed in northern my country are mainly native catfish, six-barbel catfish, Yellow River catfish, and the "catfish pregnant with fish" formed by the hybridization of native catfish and six-barbel catfish.

The six-barbel catfish has a long, scaleless body and a broad, flat head with a surprisingly wide mouth filled with rows of sandpaper-thin teeth, numbering in the hundreds. They have a set of barbels (whisker-like organs) on each jaw that help them catch prey in turbulent waters, so they can be found in Europe's great lakes and slow-flowing rivers and streams.
