Why do we eat duck during the Ghost Festival?

1. "Duck" means "pressure", which is a homonym. Eating duck is to suppress ghosts. 2. On Ghost Festival, ghosts take advantage of the holiday to return home to visit relatives. Ancient books say: humans are yang, ghosts are yin; land is yang, water is yin. Unfortunately, they can't cross the Naihe River, so ducks are used to drag souls across the river, so ducks are eaten instead of chickens. 3. Ducks are used for worship. When worshiping ancestors, the paper money and clothes used are carried by ducks across the Naihe Bridge, so ducks must be eaten on Ghost Festival.

The Ghost Festival on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month is also a festival for worshipping ancestors. Chickens cannot be used as offerings because the chicken's claws will dig out the money and things sent to the ancestors, and the wishes of the younger generation will not be passed on to the ancestors, so ducks are sent as sacrificial messengers. Why are ducks sent as sacrificial messengers? Because to go to the "underworld" you have to cross the river, and there is only one Naihe Bridge on the river. There are too many "messengers" and the bridge is crowded, while ducks can swim to the other side with the offerings for the ancestors, so ducks are the main offerings on the day of the Ghost Festival. After the sacrificial ceremony, people "scatter blessings" with the remaining ducks, so the custom of eating ducks on the Ghost Festival has been passed down.

Some people also say that eating ducks during the Ghost Festival is because it is said that the deceased ancestors will return home to visit their relatives on the Ghost Festival and have to cross the Naihe Bridge, but there is no boat to cross it. Therefore, the living people have to send some ducks down so that the ducks can swim and bring them back. Over time, it has become a tradition to eat ducks during the Ghost Festival.
